Creating an Australian California or Just California Dreaming?

Australians have been discussing the likelihood of the potential for
Western Australia to become a power house of an economy to what California
is to the U.S. In a recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald, the
Chancellor of the University of Western Australia, Michael Chaney identified
that Western Australia is in the same time zone with countries that make up
60 percent of the world’s population.

He identified that Australia must align its thinking with the increasingly
prominent Indian and China Ocean regionsand seek to optimize its relevance
and influence within "the zone's" political landscape.

"It is possible that what we are witnessing is the creation of an Australian
"California", with the centre of economic gravity in this country shifting
westwards," he said.

As the Chancellor identified California is the 8th largest economy in the world.
Australia is not even in the Top Ten let alone Western Australia.  Apparently,
there is nothing better than California Dreamin.
